wonderful project.
I saw something familiar, but of exeter, Devon etc. I grew up in the 80′s and its obvious the 80′s were pretty drag compared to how much today things are modern and clean etc.
notice all the litter in the 80′s photos? but none in the modern photos.
nice work, wish there were more to see

Seeing the picture of Andre Street reminds me of Joe Brearly – a superb and somewhat extrovert deputy headmaster at Hackney Downs School (now Mossbourne) which was very close to Andre Street.
He would give each new pupil at the school a nickname which they would have to say whenever he asked. This would be a clue to their proper name and was a quick way for him to learn everybody’s identity.
Mine was ‘the narrow street next door’….
I have worked in Hackney since 1992 with a break of only 4 years between 2001 and 2005. I think the photos are great and really show how much the Borough has changed and is still changing! I will definitly be coming to the exhibition.
A fascinating project. I look forward to seeing more of the Hackney area, pass and present which has been my home these last 11 years. A wonderful history lesson for my kids.
I was last winter involved in a similar project in the town I live in here in Finland. I started by going through various archives and looking for photos of the town and surrounding area, I then scanned them into the computer and tried to find out where they were. After that I went out with my camera and took comparative photos of the same sites in the present day. It was a very fascinating project from which I learned a lot about the history of the town. The results have been on view in the local museum this summer and have been seen by about 3000 visitors (not bad for a small town of 4500 inhabitants). As part of the project I also showed a selection of photos we were unable to identify to older residents of the area and recorded what they had to say, it was amazing to see these old peoples faces light up as they saw something from their childhood and started talking about the times places and people. The oldest photo I found dated to about 1890 and some of the sites I managed to get photos taken at about ten year periods. Keep doing this, it is very important.
I lived in Hackney in the late 80s. When I go back to Hackney now it is clear that the area has had a time of greater affluence at some point. There are less signs of ethnic communities, many new buildings, less waste ground and less deserted properties.
There are also about 100 times the number of bicycles, not sure what that means!
